A certificate signed by a trusted root CA will work, but is unnecessary. A self-signed certificate can be created for free, with OpenSSL. If a client certificate is self-signed, ircd will only verify that it is not expired. If the client certificate is not self-signed, then it must verify completely, as openssl verify would do. Make a cert if you haven’t already. XChat does not support passphrase-protected client certificates, so make sure you specify the -nodes option. Copy the cert you made into your ~/.xchat2 directory, C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\X-Chat2 directory, or from wherever XChat stores user settings. Copy the cert and key that you made into the ~/.config/quassel-irc.org/certs directory. Quassel will not use the PEM file.
